restaurants for value, the York Street Kitchen serves delicious
breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes..."
THE TORONTO SUN (Dining Out - Sara Waxman)
"In the "ohno-second" - that minuscule fraction of
time in which you realize you've just screwed up by missing the
turn off to Stratford and won't have time for dinner before the
show-now there is hope. York Street Kitchen has its timing down
pat. Since I believe exaggeration is a billion times worse than
understatement, I won't go all soft and poetic about a curried
chicken sandwich. Suffice to say they load lots of curried chicken
with celery, green onions and apples, between two thick slices of
mango chutney-slathered sourdough bread. The lemon -dill shrimp
salad sandwich runs this one a close second. This funky restaurant
may once have been a passageway between two buildings. The brick
walls have been painted bright green and decorated with witty
objects. Comfort food entrees like meatloaf and mashed potatoes
with fried onions and mushrooms, or breakfast of french toast with
Mennonite maple syrup and bacon are just a few reasons this spot
is so popular. Another reason is a bill to match its dimensions -
tiny."
THE GLOBE AND MAIL (Travel)
"Not to worry. Even the home-style take out food is a cut
above the ordinary. The double-fisted sandwiches at the York
Street Kitchen can easily be eaten picnic-style by the nearby Avon
River."
THE
GLOBE AND MAIL
(on the menu)
"Another Stratford home-cooking delight is york street
kitchen, a hole in the wall decorated like the Russian ballet. Dump
all pretensions and have comforting meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
If it's tough to get a table (no reservations), you may have to
build a sandwich from a huge selection, then rent a canoe and
paddle out to the island so you can discuss why food, sorry Will,
is 'such stuff as dreams are made on.'"
THE RECORD (Kitchener)
"When the Stratford Festival is in season, the lineups at
York Street Kitchen may start long before lunch ... There's a
wonderful light heartedness to the place. The decor is totally
casual and funky. I didn't see any two pieces of dinnerware that
matched."
OTTAWA CITIZEN
"Want to picnic in style? Order gourmet sandwiches from York
Street Kitchen."
THE TORONTO STAR(Dining Out-Cynthia Wine)
"York Street Kitchen is well known for it's sandwiches and
take-away, but the tiny restaurant's dinner menu deserves a place
of honor for its tasty values. Heaping main courses may include a
Mexican chicken soup-stew flavoured with lime and coriander; lamb
and potato curry with basmati rice; or meatloaf and mashed
potatoes. Vegetarian dishes have been especially satisfying like a
recent steaming stew full of zucchini, corn and tomatoes."
WHERE TO EAT IN CANADA (Anne Hardy)
"...they offer everything from peanut butter and jam to
kolbassa, homous, goat-cheese and smoked turkey...they're running
one of the most successful cafes in town, just around the corner
from Rundles, overlooking the river."
THE TORONTO STAR (What's On)
"This funky little restaurant and sandwich stand near the
river is a favourite among both tourists and locals because
there's never a problem getting a seat - the river is lined with
benches and picnic tables for an outdoor lunch. Build your own
sandwich with such eccentric toppings as liverwurst, sauerkraut,
peanut butter and jam, and the chef's legendary homemade corn
relish, among many others.' |
